Some video games, however, take their storytelling aspect to a different path. While various games have linear and easy to comprehend stories, other storytellers like to challenge their gamers by presenting them withnon-linear stories or by presenting them using unorthodox means. The players canplay these games on their PlayStationright now if they want to attempt to understand what these games are trying to convey.

10Kingdom Hearts

Those who have playedKingdom Heartsknow just how extremely convoluted the story of this series is. When the first game came out in 2002, the story was, in the least, a little bit more cohesive. It was cheesy and childish, sure, but it was also heartwarming.

As the years passed,Square EnixreleasedKingdom Heartssequels and spin-offs and its world got bigger and bigger. Simultaneously, its story also became more and more confusing. The series' world is indeed rich, but trying to understand the full picture of the story is like trying to piece together a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle.

9Bloodborne

Bloodborneis one ofFromSoftware Games' works of art. FromSoftware, of course, is a studio that doesn’t shy away from creating games with incredibly rich lore. The only thing is that the players will have to be extra attentive if they want to understand it.

Similar to FromSoft’s previous Souls games,Bloodbornealso has a story told in a very non-traditional manner. Those who did dig deep enough found just how complex and intricate this game’s story is.

8Death Stranding

Death Strandingwas created by Hideo Kojima. That fact itself should already tell the players that this game’s story is going to be convoluted. The very game itself is far from conventional. It is more contemplative than most triple-A video games that have come out in the past few years.

Like all Hideo Kojima games, however, there is an underlying narrative inDeath Strandingonly the most observant will probably completely understand. It’s a very unique presentation of humanity and fear and everything about it is absolutely gratifying.

7Journey

When playingJourneyfor the first time, one may believe that it’s the type of game that should be played without having to worry about any form of narrative. In a way, that sentiment is true.Journeyis a very melancholic game and it should be experienced easily. However, if taken a closer look at, the player will begin to understand that there is indeed a story here waiting to be unraveled.

Journey’sstorytelling manner is as obscure as they come. The game has no dialogue or texts. Instead, a narrative picture is presented to the players in the form of imagery and gameplay. It’s the story of desire, passion, and overcoming obstacles against all odds. It’s cute and pleasant, just like the game itself.

6Shadow Of The Colossus

Team ICO’sShadow of the Colossuswas met with critical acclaim upon release. It was so massively beloved and successful that many considered the game to be a work of art, as controversial as that topic is. Regardless,Shadow of the Colossusis an amazing game with a very deep story, but not that many people are aware of it.

The story ofShadow of the Colossusis very obscure. The players will go through the game without ever having to worry, or even think about it. All they know is they have to find giant monsters throughout the game’s world and destroy them. In the end, though, the story will become clearer, but only those attentive enough will be able to fully understand it.

5Demon’s Souls

For the gaming world to become blessed with Souls games year after year made by various developers, it needs to have a beginning. That beginning isDemon’s Souls. Demon’s Soulsis the very first “Souls-like” title. Everything about a Souls game can be traced back to this game, including the deep lore told unconventionally.

Like many of the Souls games that followed it,Demon’s Souls’story is very complex and massive. However, one won’t be able to understand it just by powering through the game. They’ll need to analyze every conversation, read every item description, and more.

4Gravity Rush

Gravity Rushis a game that initially came out on the PlayStation Vita in 2012. From the get-go, the game already screams mystery. As the game progresses, the players will be met with more questions than answers, but piecing the puzzle together will be absolutely worth it for those who are willing.

The game was already beloved for its incredible gameplay mechanics and gorgeous art direction. This game’s intricate story, albeit a little difficult to understand at first, was just the icing on the top of the cake.

3The Last Guardian

The Last Guardianis the latest game made by Team ICO, now named GenDesign, the same studio that madeShadow of the Colossus. As expected,The Last Guardianwas very similar to the studio’s previous critically acclaimed classic, for all the correct reasons.

Like their previous titles,The Last Guardian’sstory is presented to the players in the most subtle way. Even by the end of the game, most players will only get just enough information to understand the story, but nothing more to get the full picture. Digging deep enough and understanding imageries and symbolisms, however, and the player will be greeted with an incredibly lovely, emotional, and heartwarming story.

2Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture

Everybody’s Gone to the Raptureis one of the most obscure video games in PlayStation history, and that’s not a bad thing. This game is unlike most of the games popular this year. When it came out in 2015, it was very divisive. A lot of people found it bland, while others enjoyed its incredible story that’s hidden beneath the calm gameplay.

The game is very interactive and favors exploration over adrenaline-inducing gameplay elements. Those who decided to power through the game and observed it closely found a very endearing, yet heartbreaking story.

1P.T.

Despite not being a full-length game,P.T.took the world by storm with its immense quality, elements, and direction. Many consider the game to be one of thebest horror gamesof all time, despite only having about three to four hours' worth of content.

What madeP.T.so amazing, before it was unfortunately removed from the PlayStation Store, was its uneasy atmosphere and the way the story is presented. It will leave players dazed and confused for hours after finishing the game, but completely understanding it is as rewarding as it is terrifying.
