This spooky season, there are two multiplayer horror games for PC and console you might want to play with friends:Friday the 13thandDead by Daylight. The games share a lot of similarities when it comes to their base concept — survivors are dropped into a match and one person is the killer. The aim of the survivors is to escape, and the aim of the killers is to finish the match with no one left alive. Sounds pretty simple and similar, but the games have some key differences and there are some points of contention about which of the horror games is actually better. Strap in, because we’re here to decide once and for all.

The graphics inFriday the 13thare pretty outdated — let’s be honest. For such a recent game, not a whole lot of effort went into them and they’re also glitchy as hell. You can be driving the car, get out, and stuck floating around in a sitting position with your hands on a nonexistant steering well.

Meanwhile,Dead by Daylighthas detailed characters and killers, and the graphics are just a lot more seamless. If you want to play based on visuals because that’s what keeps you invested, you now know which game to choose.

9Light Fun: Friday The 13th

If you’re looking for something light-hearted, you’re probably going to want to go withFriday.Although the game can be a bit tense the first time you’re dropped into a match, it’s definitely a little more fun in terms of not taking itself too seriously, so if you’re cosying up on the couch with a controller to play against your friends — this may be the one for you.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who wants to get invested in a game and actually feel some achievement as you get good,Daylightis going to be the one for you. That’s not to say thatFridaydoesn’t requireanyskill, but the skill checks are a lot more difficult inDaylightthan the repair mini games ofFriday, and it’s a lot more difficult to get away from the killer once he’s on your tail.

7Play With Friends: Friday The 13th

You can create a private match in both games to just play with your friends butFridayis just better set up for it. You can create a private match entirely or you can buddy up in a party system and be loaded into a lobby with other random people to be set up for a full match.Daylightdidn’t have this feature for a long time and although they now have a party system, it’s still bringing up a lot ofbugs and lagging for some people.

you’re able to also invite up to nine people in a singleFridaymatch including the killer, whereas inDaylight, you’re limited to five.

Friday the 13thwas involved in a long lawsuitwhich ended in the development of the game being canceled. They still update it to fix bugs and are claiming the game will stick around, but no more DLC content can be added. Meanwhile,Daylightare continuously adding DLC content and whole new realms, the most recent of which being theStranger Thingscontent where you can play as Steve and Nancy or even the Demogorgon. Hard to beat that.

5Ability To Fight Back: Friday The 13th

Something that can get incredibly frustrating inDaylightis the lack of ability to fight back. The only way to fight the killer is to drop a pallet on him while running or shine a flashlight directly in his flash, both of which taking timing and/or aim that’s often impossible. All you’re able to really do when he’s on your tail? Run.

Friday, however, litters weapons around the map that can be used to satisfyinglythwackJason such as baseball bats, axes, and machetes. You can stun and damage him (and even kill him).

It’s hard to beat the multiple characters ofDaylight, spanning across multiple horror movies and franchises. There’s not justStranger Thingsbut a whole bunch —Scream, Halloween, and so many more.Fridayonly has the survivors of the movies and each version of Jason.

Sure, it’d be missing the point to include anything else, butDaylightstill wins overall in this aspect.

3Playable Killers: Tie

When it comes to the killers specifically, it has to be a tie. Sure,Daylighthas more variable options, butFridayhas to be given a nod for the sheer fact that it’s given each version of Jason something original, with different strengths and weaknesses. The fact the killers vary in both games means that you can switch around and they’re both endlessly fun.

Both of the games involve a perks system, where as you level up and gain more experience in the game, you can get different perks for your survivors. ButDaylightgoes one step further and adds perks for killers too, with some perks being unique to a survivor or killer. Overall, it’s just a much more complex and varied system, but it also churns out better perks in the end.

The leveling system inFridayis simple: 150 is the max level, you start at 1, and you work your way up with experience. When you hit 150, you’re maxed out.

Daylight, however, has a level per character as well as player, and then a prestige level after that. This means that when you max a character out, you’re not left asking yourself what the point of playing even is any more.

So although both games have their merits,Dead By Daylightis probably the better game to get invested in overall. That doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to sit down and playFridaywith some friends, though!
