Elvis Presley has been having something of a moment in the last year. With Austin Butler’s electrifying performance in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic earning an academy award nomination, it’s clear that the king of rock and roll has been thrust back into the public consciousness. That’s also made evident by an upcoming Netflix series that tells a very different kind of Elvis story.

Agent Elvis, a new animated seriespremiering on the streamer, will feature the world-famous performer as a jetsetting spy, applying his signature attitude and style to saving the world. None other than Matthew McConaughey (who, like Elvis Presley, also hails from the American South) will be providing the voice of the iconic singer turned secret agent. Priscilla Presley, who married Elvis in 1967, co-created the new series along with John Eddie.

Judging by the short teaser released by Netflix,Agent Elviswill be sending Presley on some truly wild adventures, along with a likely frustrated partner. Scenes include actual accomplishments from Presley’s life like meeting President Richard Nixon, to not-so-actual accomplishments like landing on the moon. There’s also a monkey with a gun, and proof that Elvis is pretty deadly even when all he has is a really nice pen.

Agent Elviscomes from Sony Animation Studios, which has garnered plenty ofpraise for its work onSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The show will be the studio’s first foray into adult animation, and judging by the trailer, it appears that the series will not be holding anything back. Academy Award-nominated Canadian animator Robert Valley (who also worked onNetflix’sLove, Death + Robots, for which he won an Emmy) helped to bring Elvis’s iconic look to the series. The show is also getting a stylistic lift from fashion designer John Varvatos, who designed the look of Elvis’s wardrobe for the series.

Agent Elviswill join the ranks of other Netflix adult animated series likeBig Mouth,Disenchanted, andBojack Horseman. However, it remains to be seen if the show will have the same longevity as any of those series, or if it will only last one season likeHoopsorInside Job(which was unceremoniously canceleddespite receiving a second season order). Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos suggested thatthe streamer has never canceled a successful show, so ifAgent Elvisgets enough eyes on it, it may be able to stick around long enough for the King to see himself on plenty of wild missions.

Agent Elvisis set to premiere in March 2023.
