Summary
Amazon’s hit 2021 MMORPG,New World, is finally being ported over to consoles later this year. Developed by Amazon Games Orange County,New Worldwas wildly popular upon launch, but the game’s staying power has waned over the last few years. Bringing the MMORPG to new platforms will likely give the title a much-needed shot in the arm, and it’ll allow players to enjoy the game without requiring a gaming PC.
After a handful of delays and a great deal of hype surrounding the game’s release,New Worldcame out on Windows PCs in September 2021. As Amazon Games' second major AAA title, the game had a lot to prove, especially followingthe launch failure of Crucible, another multiplayer game from the company. Unfortunately,New Worldgot off to a bit of a rough start for a variety of reasons, from lengthy queue times and lackluster endgame content to overpriced microtransactions and weak plot threads. Despite the player count steadily declining due to these issues, the game was able to improve sentiment among some fans over the next few months with consistent content updates and eventual major expansions, like 2022’sBrimstone Sands. And now, gamers on next-gen consoles will soon be able to experience these improvements for themselves.

New World: Aeternum Could Mark a Turning Point for the MMORPG
In a press release, Amazon Games revealed thatAeternumwill bring some ofthe biggest improvementsNew World’s seen since launch, including features like a “large-scale player-vs.-player zone, a challenging 10-player raid, end-game solo trials, an upgraded leveling experience, new character archetypes, a revamped dialogue system, and much more.” In addition, “competitive and cooperative online cross-platform play” will be fully enabled uponNew World’s release on consoles. The game will even include “target locking and aim assist, virtual cursor, controller navigation and accessibility features” on consoles, according to Amazon.
New World: Aeternumwill launch digitally at $59.99 USD on next-gen consoles and PC. ThoughAeternumwill be free for those who own the base game and theRise of the Angry Earthexpansion on Steam, players who only own the base game will have to purchase the aforementioned expansion to experienceAeternum’s content. Hopefully, this major update will mark a turning point forNew Worldand bring a wave of new and returning players to the game, in the same way that otherexpansions managed to save MMOs.
