Summary
While fans of Obsidian Entertainment’sPillars of Eternityseries may be looking forward to playingAvowedas a variety of races from its shared universe, that will regrettably not be possible, as the developer has confirmedAvowedplayers can only create either a Human or an Elf character. This is largely due to the fact that the player character comes from the Aedyr Empire, which primarily consists of Humans and Elves. Lore aside, however, this is an unfortunate downside toAvowed’s character creation, especially considering the number of playable races made available in thePillars of Eternityseries.
Avowed’s character creation restrictionsmay be one of its most significant drawbacks, especially for role-playing enthusiasts, but it simultaneously opens the door to other possibilities. It has already been confirmed thatAvowedwill allow players to recruit companions during their journey, and despite its companions having limitations such as not being romanceable, they may still serve as a sort of bandage on the wound inflicted by the limitations of the game’s character creation.

Avowed’s Companions Could Be the Answer to Its Character Creation Restrictions
Not much is known aboutAvowed’s companionsat this point, apart from what can be expected from typical Obsidian companions and a few bits the developer has shared in interviews. However, some information onAvowed’s Steam page suggests that the game’s companions could be a silver lining to its character creation restrictions. After all, with such limitations being applied to the game’s character creation, it would be nice if those same limitations didn’t apply to its companions.
According to a portion of the description onAvowed’s Steam page, “companions from a spread of species” will be joining the player in their journey through the world of Eora.In thePillars of EternityseriesAvowedis based on, there are six playable races, which means this “spread of species” will likely take that into account — that is the hope, at least. Aside from Humans and Elves, this would include Aumaua, Dwarves, Orlans, and Godlike. Thankfully, it seems an Aumaua companion has already been confirmed forAvowed.

One of Avowed’s Confirmed Companions Is From a Non-Human, Non-Elf Race
In an extended gameplay breakdown forAvowedwith Game Director Carrie Patel and Gameplay Director Gabe Paramo, two companions were confirmed for the game: Kai and Giatta. In the breakdown, Patel explains that Kai is originally from the Great Kingdom of Rauatai, an Aumaua nation from thePillars of Eternityseries. His appearance alone has always suggested he is an Aumaua, due to the race’s distinct aquatic skin and qualities, but with it verified now, this simultaneously confirms the presence of other races inAvowed’s companions.
The developer has remained cryptic about Giatta, on the other hand, but it’s fairly clear that she is a Human. This could be a sign thatAvowed’s companions won’t be as varied as Obsidian suggests in the game’s Steam page description, but Kai and Giatta are likely just two of the many companions players will be able to recruit inAvowed, asPillars of Eternity’s eleven companionsandPillars of Eternity 2’s seven suggest a healthy number forAvowedas well.

It will be interesting to see to what extent Obsidian has gone with the races ofAvowed’s companions. The best-case scenario would be for players to have at least one companion from each race, including a Human and an Elf, even though they can already create a character from this race when they start the game. At the very least,Avowed’s confirmed Aumaua companionis a good sign of what is to come.
