Summary

The main menu inBaldur’s Gate 3features an obscure Easter egg in the form of a cameo from Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke, as recently spotted by one eagle-eyed fan. This in-game nod to the ever-passionate executive was unearthed within days ofBaldur’s Gate 3releasing to critical acclaimand fan adoration alike.

TheBaldur’s Gate 3bossis a well-known personality in the CRPG community, not least because of his tendency to pop up in developer vlogs and other promos for Larian’s games, often in a full set of ornate armor, which became sort of a running gag for the Belgian company. One of the most well-known examples of that joke dates back to a 2019 promo advertising the Definitive Edition ofDivinity: Original Sin 2, which featured an armored Vincke breaking into Valve on a mission to implement cross-save functionality between the PC and Switch versions of the game.

The CRPG fandom has now recorded yet another sighting of Vincke donning his signature armor, as the 51-year-old executive was recently spotted in the artwork displayed in theBaldur’s Gate 3main menu. The small cameo, first highlighted by Reddit user Acozz85, is all too easy to miss, with Vincke’s character being depicted as the leader of a distant party exploring one late-game location from the newly released RPG. And while the artwork isn’t detailed enough to zoom in on the character’s face, many fans chiming in on this sighting have agreed that the similarities between Vincke’s favorite look and the wandering hero from the main menu are too numerous to be accidental.

The fact that this Easter egg—however obscure—was spotted within days of the game’s release is not particularly surprising, asBaldur’s Gate 3already amassed quite the attention, having sold around 2.5 million copies during the three-year early access period leading up to its August 3 launch. A significant portion of its buyers have also been playing it at launch, to the point thatBaldur’s Gate 3is now closing in onHogwarts Legacy’sSteam recordfor the highest concurrent player count in 2023.

Vincke’sBaldur’s Gate 3cameo is far from the only example of the incredible attention to detail that went into the making of Larian’s latest game. Since the series itself is based on theDungeons and Dragonstabletop RPG, one of its main gameplay goals was to deliver an immense level of freedom by consistently placing players in a position to make meaningful choices. As a result of that design philosophy,Baldur’s Gate 3boasts thousands of possible ending variationsand near-infinite replayability.

Baldur’s Gate 3is available now on PC and launches September 6 on PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S port also being in development.
