Most gamers cannot prevent a console taking some damage over the years since it was first purchased, and dust is likely to cover many older machines. There’s even problems caused by manufacturers and platform owners, such as the infamousJoy-Con drift of the Nintendo Switch. However, not many console owners can say that their piece of gaming kit was in such a poor state that the TSA mistook it for a bomb. On Sunday, April 17, this is exactly what happened as aPlayStationwas so damaged that it was unrecognizable to the employees of Boston’s Logan International Airport.
The degraded PlayStation was discovered in the mid-afternoon at the airport, and was regarded as a suspicious item by the TSA. ThePlayStationwas deemed such a threat to safety that the passengers of Terminal A had to be evacuated, and a bomb disposal unit was dispatched to deal with it. According to a statement by Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio, the console’s external features were mostly fine, but in the x-ray its internal issues caused concern.

It is unclear as to what these abnormalities with the PlayStation console were, or even what kind of PlayStation it was that caused the confusion. Many over social media are hoping that it was not a PlayStation 5 left in such a condition that it couldn’t be identified properly with an x-ray. While the situation has improved since 2020, thelatest PlayStation is still difficult to get for many gamers, due to scalpers and other problems persisting within the console market. For someone to mistreat a new console to a point where it’s unrecognizable would likely anger many gamers over social media.
This is not the first time a gaming item has been found to be suspicious by airport authorities. In November 2021, a huge amount ofcounterfeitPokemoncardswere seized at a Chinese airport heading for Europe. Considering how popular the trading card market has become, there is also profit to be made from people making fake cards and scamming buyers. Logan Paul saw a scam firsthand as he spent a large sum on what turned out to beG.I. Joetrading cards.
Logan International Airport was shut down for just over an hour, with passengers who had already boarded their planes also being told to evacuate. No information has been revealed on the fate of the PlayStation or its owner that caused the whole situation. Hopefully both owner and console can be reunited soon enough, if only for the player to clean up their machine. If it is a PS5 that they managed to make unrecognizable, they could always cover up the damages with one of itsnew PlayStation console covers.
