Dead Cellsdeveloper Motion Twin has announced the latest update coming to the title through the game’s Steam page. This update, dubbed the Legacy Update, will bring some new items to the game, but the most interesting prospect about this update is the way that it will let players play older versions ofDead Cells.

Coming off the heels of a newly announcedDLC forDead Cells, the Legacy Update looks to attract players to rejoin the game in preparation for the new content coming to the 2018 title. The update will allow players to play any previous build of the game, complete with glitches, exploits, and balance issues.

The Steam announcement also comes with an explanation for how to open previous builds, as well as how to keep Steam Cloud from deleting old saves. This isn’t the first time thatDead Cellshas tried to reinvigorateplayers with content updates, although the Legacy Update surprisingly takes a different approach to capturing player attention. According to Motion Twin, the decision to create an update that allows for this type of backpedaling comes from seeing how the regular updates thatDead Cellshas received has slowly been changing the game that players originally fell in love with.

The ability to play older builds of the game isn’t all the Legacy Update is bringing with it though.Dead Cellswill also be receiving two new weapons, two new mutations, weapon balancing to make three of the least popular weapons more useful, and a Santa skin just in time for the Holidays. This new content, while it might be the only way for fans toget moreDead Cells, is only available in the most recent build of the game, so players will have to wait to play the older versions ofthe title if they want to celebrate in style.

This Legacy Update does raise the question of developers allowing players to turn back the clock and play older and even broken versions of the game. BetweenDead Cellsand Blizzard’sWorld of Warcraft Classicreleasedearlier this year, developers have been giving players more control over how they play than ever, without the need for outside mods. Although, whether or not other titles will follow suit is yet to be seen, even if fan reactions to these options has been fairly positive in the past.

Dead Cellsis available now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
