Dead Island 2, the long-awaited zombie action RPG from Dambuster Studios, will feature an interesting system that will allow players to unleash their own mutation powers, as seen in recent extended gameplay footage. With the success of Endnight’sSons of the Forestscoring one for the indie scene and the upcomingResident Evil 4remake batting for the AAA sphere, now is an exciting time to be into horror games.

Those who have been waiting for the follow-up to 2011’sDead Islandwere no doubt excited to learn thatDead Island 2had its release date moved forward, with the game now coming out on April 21. While the first game in the series was not as well-received as many had hoped, the upcoming second entry is one that plenty of fans have been looking forward to for years, with this installment going for a more humorous tone, as evidenced in the trailers.

Now, some new footage shows off what players can expect whenDead Island 2releases. Although still a work-in-progress, the gameplay video gives a good insight into the game as it stands, showing off the world and the action. The most interesting thing, however, is the ability to mutate. In the footage, it shows Dani, one of six possible playable characters, using her “corrupted DNA” to become ever more powerful, unleashing “explosive abilities” that actually mimic the power of the undead. It looks like it’s going to add something juicy to the combat system. However, the narrator does say that this feature won’t be available in the early stages of the game.

The video also shows offDead Island 2’s FLESH system. This is a gruesome procedural feature that really lets players get a taste of bloodlust as they hack and slash at zombies, killing them in some extremely gory ways. Overall, the extended gameplay is pretty tantalizing, giving a brief taste of what’s in store.

Although the genre isn’t quite as popular as it once was, zombie games seem to be back in vogue. The likes ofDying Light 2,Back 4 Blood, andDead Island 2show that there’s still room in the gaming world for ripping apart hordes of the undead. If Dambuster’s recent footage is anything to go by, horror and action fans won’t be disappointed with what awaits them in this fictionalized version of LA.

Dead Island 2launches on April 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
