Bungie crowned the victors of theDestiny 2Vault of Glass world-first race yesterday. Fireteams had to first clear the Vault of Glass regularly, followed by completing Bungie’s new Challenge Mode for the raid. In oneDestiny 2player’s case, earning second place in the Vault of Glass race led to a very bad day, as they have now had theirDestiny 2account permanently banned.
As fireteams completed the world-first race for theVault of Glass raid, they earned achievements and triumphs that made their progress trackable. As such, the public was able to see who completed the raid and when soon after each team finished.Destiny 2fans were surprised to see one of the names from the second team to complete the raid was offensive, listed as “#BlackLivesDon’tMatter.”

What followed was a wave of players reporting the name and flagging Bungie employees on social media. This ledBungie senior community manager Dylan Gafnerto directly respond. Gafner said that the name breaks the officialDestiny 2Code of Conduct, and as a result the player would be banned. He then askedDestiny 2players to report offensive names at the platform-level, too, so they’d be caught before they ended up onDestiny 2’s world-first leaderboard.
Gafner’s promise has been followed through on, as while the player hasn’t made themselves known, their account has disappeared. Theleaderboard for Vault of Glassnow has an absence in the second finisher’s roster. Only five players' names are listed, making it seem like the team completed the raid with a handicap. Regardless, it was the right thing to do.
Ultimate, the situation is negative in all regards. While it’s good to seeBungie’s customer service teamacting fast to remove the offensive name, it’s a shame that it was allowed to get to that point in the first place. There’s no way to efficiently stop that from happening, however, since Steam users are able to alter their usernames with ease. No automated moderation system can catch everything.
The race itself was everythingDestiny 2players were hoping for, at least. The first-place team completed the Vault of Glass race in less than two hours, more than 30 minutes faster than any other team. It paves the way for an even more exciting race when Bungie launches theVault of Glass Master Difficulty.
