It’s that time of the year when many will reflect on the games that have launched throughout 2021. While there will be lists upon lists of the best of the best, there will also be those releases that are considered an immense letdown. While Grove Street Games’remaster of theGTA Trilogyhas been universally criticized, perhaps being one of the biggest disappointments of the year, there is another game that sits at the top, or, more appropriately, at the bottom, of the list of the year’s worst,eFootball 2022.

Konamihas not been having a great time of things, lately. Since the significant break-up between it and famed auteur Hideo Kojima, which resulted in the loss of a newSilent Hillgame, the company has not been making a lot of friends. On top of that initial controversy, the Japanese developer and publisher unleashedeFootballat the end of September. The result was not pretty, with the game being panned by players and critics alike, to such an extent that Metacritic declares it the worst PC game of the year, with an overall score of just 25. For reference,GTA Trilogyon PC is two spaces above, currently sitting at 49.

With a launch state that could be considered laughable, the game was strewn with bugs, poor gameplay, as well as visuals that did not suggest it was a game that had been made this year.Konami even issued an apology foreFootball, with the company acknowledging the negative feedback that the game had been receiving. A 1.0 update was due to be released which would address some of the concerns. However, according to the Konami website, only 0.91 is currently available, with the newer patch having been delayed. Overall, the game being considered the worst on PC for the year is perhaps not too surprising.

There were some other nominations as well, such asBalan Wonderlandon the Switch, which has a score of 36. The Yuji Naka, ofSonic the Hedgehogfame, creation wasone of the most disappointing games of the 2021, with many fans feeling let down that a game created by such a luminary could be so lackluster.

The general consensus seems to be thateFootballwas a terribly executed game, where it should have been a spiritual continuation of the now-defunctPro Evolution Soccerseries. Given its low position on the Metacritic PC scoreboard,FIFAis probably not too concerned about it being pushed aside to make way for a new soccer game champion.

eFootball 2022is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
