Black Flame, a power wielded by Godslayers, the followers of the Gloam-Eyed Queen, once brought fear to the gods and demi-gods throughout the Lands Between. While apostles lost the true power of Black Flame after Maliketh sealed Destined Death, this raging fire is still a force to reckon with inElden Ring. While exploring the Lands Between, players will come across Godskin Apostles and Nobles who still wield the power of Black Flame.
Elden Ringoffers a wide variety of spells for players to use, including Black Flame magic. Black Flame is one of the strongest incantation classes inElden Ring. Its real strength lies in its ability to deal damage based on the target’s max HP. For this reason alone, Black Flame spells turn out to be an easy strategy to cheese many of the final bosses, as they have a large pool of health and are weak to fire damage.
When combined with a pure Faith caster build, Black Flame spells can breeze through most enemies in the game. The best thing about Black Flame spells is you can get their strongest spell quite early. As you progress through the Lands Between, you can discover more Black Flame spells, most of which are locked behind Godskin bosses. Black Flame & Black Flame Blade
Stormveil Castle
Black Flame and Black Flame Blade are two of the Godslayer spells available at the starting region ofElden Ring. Black Flame hurls a ball of raging fire, dealing immense Fire damage and sapping away a percentage of the target’s HP. Black Flame Blade is an infusion spell that coats your weapon with Black Flame for a few seconds.
Players can find theGodskin Prayerbooklocked behind a white fog wall inStormveil Castle. To unlock this door, you will have to insert aStonesword Keyinto the imp statue next to the door. After obtaining theGodskin Prayerbook, give it to eitherBrother Corhynin Roundtable Hold orMiriel, Pastor of Vows, in the Church of Vows to unlock the trades for Black Flame and Black Flame Blade.
To get the Godskin Prayerbook, teleport to the Rampart Tower site of grace in Stormveil Castle. Then, leave through the exit on the north and sprint and jump to the roof on the east. Drop down to the area with lots of guards to find an entrance going into a cellar infested with rats. Defeat these annoying enemies and head straight to find the fog wall. Insert a Stonesword Key into the imp statue to remove the wall and collect the Godskin Prayerbook and the Godslayer Seal inside the room. This seal is best for a Black Flame build, as it buffs all Godslayer incantations by 10%.
Black Flame’s Protection
Gideon Ofnir the All-Knowing
Black Flame’s Protection is an excellent body buff that enhances the character’s resistance to all Physical attacks but lowers healing from flasks. This spell is a reward given byGideon Ofnirwhen you select the “about the secret medallion” option while talking to him. This dialogue option appears only after you have reachedMiquella’s Haligtreedungeon.
Interestingly, Gideon Ofnir gives players the best defensive spell to counterMalenia, Blade of Miquella, boss found at the bottom of the Haligtree. This is one of the many reasonswhyElden Ringfans believe Gideon Ofnir to be spyingon the Tarnished. In case you have defeated Gideon Ofnir before reaching Miquella’s Haligtree, you may purchase Black Flame’s Protection from Twin Maiden Husks.
Scouring Black Flame
Scouring Black Flame is another strong incantation wielded by Godskin Apostles inElden Ring. It sends a wave of Black Flame in front of the character, hitting any target in its range. To get this spell, players will have todefeat the Godskin Apostlelocated at the top ofDominula, Windmill Villagein Altus Plateau. This village can be reached by taking the exit north of Outer Wall Battleground site of grace or by taking the waypoint teleporter near Forest-Spanning Greatbridge grace site and then going east from there.
TheGodskin Apostle (Dominula, Windmill Village)is a tough boss and has a second phase when its health drops to half. If you are having trouble beating the Godskin Apostle at Windmill Village, consider progressingMillicent’s questlineuntil the point where you give her Valkyrie’s Prosthesis. After that, you can find her summon sign just before the boss fight. Players who don’t want an easy way out are recommended to use physical attacks, especially katanas and curved swords because of the Apostle’s low slash resistance. After killing the Godskin Apostle, you will be rewarded with the Scouring Black Flame spell and a twinblade called Godskin Peeler.
Noble Presence
Volcano Manor
Noble Presence is one of the iconic attacks of Godskin Nobles. Just like their attack, Noble Presence creates a shockwave around the character and can launch medium-sized enemies into the air when charged. Along with the shockwave, enemies are also affected by Black Flame, which saps away a couple of percentage of their health.
To get the Noble Presence spell, players will have to defeat theGodskin Noble (Volcano Manor)located insideVolcano Manor. From the Prison Town Church site of grace in Volcano Manor, head south and carefully jump down to the lava by using ledges and staircases available. Without wasting too much time on lava, start going east to find a lift guarded by a humanoid snake enemy. Use this lift to go up and find a Black Monk enemy. Players can find the entrance to Godskin Noble just a little ahead of the Black Monk. Before fighting the boss, be sure to activate the lever in the north to unlock a shortcut path from the Prison Town Church.
Like the Apostle, the Godskin Noble is also weak to slash attacks, but its thick armor gives it high resistance against strike attacks. While fighting the Godskin Noble in Volcano Manor, players can use the pillars to avoid many of its attacks, especially its rolling move and black fireballs.
Black Flame Ritual
Spiritcaller Cave
Black Flame Ritual is the last Black Flame spell on this list. This spell creates a ring of Black Flame around the caster. It can deal immense damage to large enemies while protecting players from aggressive opponents in PVP. To get this spell, players will have to head all the way to theSpiritcaller Cavelocated on the west side of Freezing Lake in the Mountaintops of the Giants. The entrance to the cave will have to be unlocked by spending two Stonesword Keys.
As its name suggests, Spiritcaller’s Cave is filled with spiritcaller snails who can summon spirits to aid in their fights. Players will have to face spirits of wolves and samurais wieldingSeppuku weapon skill. At the end of the cave, you will have to fight a Godskin Apostle and a Godskin Noble to reveal the spiritcaller snail. Once the snail is defeated, you will be rewarded with the Black Flame Ritual spell.
