George R.R. admitted in an interview that he hasn’t playedEldenRingat all to finish his pending projects. The renowned author ofASong of Ice and Firerecently releasedThe Rise of the Dragon: An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty, a graphic novel featuring new artwork based onFire and Blood.

Developer FromSoftware collaborated with Martin to write a significant portion ofElden Ring’s lore. In a recent interview onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he said he covered the events that happened 5,000 years before the game’s current timeline. With this knowledge, fans have previously pointed out elements in the game, such as the names of characters that start with G, R, M, that were allegedly meant to pay homage to the author. Martin denied these on his blog a number of times.

That being said, Martin revealed he hasn’t playedElden Ringsince it came out earlier this year. Speaking to Colbert, he said he was afraid that he’d get too addicted to it that he wouldn’t be able to finishThe Winds of Winter, the sixth novel in theSong of Ice and Fireseries. He was also aware of fans who have been waiting for years, and assured them that the book is about three-quarters done. In the past, Martin was an avid player of titles likeRailroad Tycoon, Master of Orion, andHomeworld. He recounted that he would spend hours, weeks, and months playing them.

Martin also acknowledged the work that’s put into games likeElden Ring.He realized that video games took as long to make as full-length movies, even longer. Heproceeded to praiseElden Ring, calling it the most beautiful game he’s ever seen with the amount of detail and world building that was put in.

Elden Ringplayerscan certainly relate to Martin’s concerns, especially with the amount of tough boss battles that they have to endure in the game. Some have even gone as far to replay it multiple times to test out other builds, and to dovariousElden Ringchallenge runswhile carrying limited resources. The game is a commitment in itself.

With60 hours worth of gameplay, perhaps Martin could start playingElden Ringonce he finally finishesThe Winds of Winter. But that would also mean it might take a long time for the nextSong of Ice and Firebook to be finished. Nonetheless, it just shows that even legendary authors like him could get so engrossed in games just like everyone else.

Elden Ringis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
