Summary

Even though Insomniac has yet to officially announce it, leaks have suggested that the studio is planning to develop its very ownX-Mengame. Currently slated for a 2028 release, this game will see some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes come together for an exciting new experience. Since barely anything is known about it yet, fans have been spending the last couple of months theorizing about exactly whatX-Menwill entail. Realistically, many of these theories could prove accurate, as Insomniac has numerous stories it could tell with the titular team.

The X-Men were first introduced way back in 1963, and since then, there have been countless stories exploring the faction’s many characters. Not only has it dominated comics for years, but the team also spawned its very own film franchise and the wildly popularX-Men: The Animated Series. Additionally, now that Disney owns the film rights to the team, viewers have been treated to the likes ofX-Men ‘97,the upcomingDeadpool and Wolverine, and an impending live-action reboot. X-Men fans have had so much content to enjoy over the years, and that gives Insomniac a ton of material to work with.

Insomniac’s X-Men Game Has Many Stories That It Could Go Down

Insomniac May Want to Follow Fox or Disney’s Lead

One of the easiest things for Insomniac to do with itsX-Mengame is to simply follow the lead of Fox’s film franchise. The original trilogy showed a team that had been fighting together for years and how the introduction of the likes of Wolverine, Rogue, and a mutant cure uproots everything they have built. The series would then go on to explorethe Dark Phoenix saga twice, the earliest iteration of the team inX-Men: First Class, and a time-travel filled adventure inX-Men: Days of Future Past. While not all of these films may have been met with critical acclaim, some of them told fantastic superhero tales that would make for great video games.

Insomniac could also follow Disney’s lead by crafting somethingakin to the recentX-Men ‘97. That show served as a continuation ofX-Men: The Animated Seriesand presented a battle-hardened team dealing with the death of Professor X. What ensued was a thrilling 10 episodes that saw this team grapple with new threats, changing leadership, and old enemies seeking to do them harm once more. There was no set-up needed, as the team had already been forged, and the show simply had to jump right into the action, which made for some great television.

While following those projects could make for a great game, Insomniac has shown that it has little interest in just copying what has already been done.ThroughMarvel’s Spider-Man, it crafted its own version of these characters, its own world, and told its own story. Of course, all of that stemmed from the pages of comic books or other Spider-Man media, but at its core it was something wholly unique. And there is a strong chance that the studio will do the very same thing withX-Men.

In fact, doing something new and original with the characters may actually be better for the game in the long run. Because if Insomniac simply followed in the footsteps of Fox or Disney, then fans would endlessly compare the stories. But, if the studio explored a new X-Men story or combined the best bits of beloved comic arcs into something unique, then it may not have that same issue. However, at the same time, doing something new is also incredibly risky if not handled with care.

Since very little is known about Insomniac’sX-Men, it is hard to say what exactly the game’s story will look like. There is a strong chance thatthe upcomingMarvel’s Wolverinewill begin laying the groundwork, and thenMarvel’s Spider-Man 3may connect to it in some way. Other than that, all that fans can really do is wait. But, based on the developer’s previous superhero games, players are likely in for an exciting treat no matter what decision the studio ultimately makes.
