ActressCeleste O’Connor has also been addedto the film’s cast list, with her role undisclosed as well. With the recent news of O’Connor being attached to the film came the reveal of a new synopsis for Sony’sMadame Web. In the film description that Sony shared with Variety and Deadline, the brief synopsis says, “the film will be an origin story of the clairvoyantMadame Web, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.”
In the comics, theMadame Webcharacterappeared for the first time in 1981’sAmazing Spider-Man#210. In that story, Madame Web, also known as Cassandra Webb, was an elderly woman who worked withSpider-Manby using her clairvoyant vision powers. The character was born blind but has telepathic, clairvoyant, and precognitive mutant abilities. However, in the comics, there is also anotherMadame Webnamed Julia Carpenter, who becomes injected with a mix of venom and exotic plant extracts, giving Carpenter powers that were almost identical to Spider-Man’s.
With this just being a short snippet of the plot of the soon-to-be-releasedMadame Webfilm, it’s still unknown if Johnson will portray Cassandra Webb or Julia Carpenter, but considering her age it’s fair to assume she will portray Carpenter. Also takingMadame Web’s connection to the Spider-Man universeinto consideration, it’s fair to assume that audiences will see different characters within the universe, like Tom Holland’sSpider-Manor even the introduction of otherSpider-Manvariations like Miles Morales, who has yet to be portrayed in live-action yet. Hopefully, this film will be better received than Sony’s more recent Spider-Man universe films likeMorbius, which didn’t do too well, and the multipleVenomfilms that received mixed reviews from audiences.
Despite bad reviews from fans and critics, Sony continues to push out more Spidey content left and right, withMadame Webon its way and theKraven the Hunterfilm that’s currently in production. Nonetheless, with a strong female cast in place so far, and all the actresses having strong dedicated fan bases, the theater seats are more than likely to be filled whenMadame Webis released.
Madame Webhits theaters on July 7th, 2023.
