With thefirst few episodesofMade In Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sunbeing released, anime fans can finally continue along Riko, Reg, and Nanachi’s journey as they go past the point of no return and dive deeper into the abyss. With new encounters, dangers, and surprises in store, fans may begin to speculate whether the trio can return to the surface and reunite with friends. One such possible way is via the ‘blessings’ of the abyss as described by the White Whistle Bondrewd, the sovereign of dawn.

Though not fully understood in its entirety, the blessing is essentially seen as one being able to retain one’s humanity and form whilst traversing through the abyss. This is specifically related to the 6th layerwhere the curse demonstratesone’s loss of humanity and intelligence or death upon ascending. Characters such as Nanachi, Mitty, and Bondrewd from the first season and movie have demonstrated the effects of the blessing. Though the blessing is visually distinct, it has other aspects that viewers may not be familiar with.

4It Grants Longevity And Even Immortality

Nanachi and Mitty are case study examples of how the blessings of the abyss work. The pair are seen as ‘successful’ as Nanachi was able to retain her humanity and ability to reason at the cost of Mitty’s humanity and form. As demonstrated by the pair, both Nanachi and Mitty have shown little aging withMitty herself being immortal.Despite her horrible transformation, Mitty also shows quick self-regeneration, is nearly indestructible, and her fluids can help remove poisons. Furthermore, whilst Mitty also doesn’t require sustaining herself with food or water, making her in theory completely self-sufficient.

Whilst what happened to Mitty can be considered to be a fate worse than death, she does exhibit some blessingsfrom Bondrewd’s experiments. Whilst Nanachi doesn’t have the same abilities Mitty does, her existence displays her longevity and shows that one’s humanity can be retained returning from the 6th level. A feat that Bondrewd demonstrates in theMade In Abyssfilm.

3It Allows One To See The Curse

Once Nanachi transformed into a Narehate (creatures that receive the ‘blessings’ of the abyss), she can see and observe the curse. This is demonstrated when she explains to Reg that the curse is a forcefield and uses the blanket analogy to illustrate her point.

As the effects of the curse can still affect a Narahate such as Nanachi herself, the gift of sight allows those blessed to maneuver and navigate one’s way to minimize or even eliminate the effects of the curse. This is how Nanachi can establish her hideout at a location where the curse or forcefield is non-existent which can explain how creatures within the abyss are not subject to the effects of the curse or can naturally avoid the negative effects.

2The Discovery Of The Blessing Revealed Bondrewd’s True Character

Whilst Bondrewd might not bethe best anime villain ever, his actions and motivations may be on par with Shou Tucker fromFull Metal Alchemist.horrific actions. In an attempt to overcome the effects of the curse from the 6th level, Bondrewd willingly fostered a child (Prushka) and used that child’s love and devotion to reach a scientific breakthrough at the cost of his daughter’s life.

Though despicable, one can see the lengths Bondrewd is willing to go, although it is also explained how hemight have lost his minddue to the effects of his artifact, Zoaholic. It is also revealed that Bondrewd is preparing for the ‘next 2000 years' and that some sort of cycle is in the works that many others aren’t familiar with. In some ways, Bondrewd can be seen as a sort of ‘priest’ of the abyss who is devoted to unveiling and overcoming the abyss’ secrets, with the abyss being this so-called ‘god’. Completely deplorable and twisted, one can only imagine what the other white whistles are like in comparison to Bondrewd and Ozen.

1It Happens More Frequently Than People Think

Those familiar with the story so far will know that there are many Narehate or ‘blessed ones’ that reside in the 6th layer of the abyss. Currently, many are familiar with the Narehate that Bondrewd created that were abandoned in the miniature garden of dawn, former children that were transformed intocreatures similar to Mitty.

However, the Narehate village known as Iiblu contains many Narehate capable of intelligence and self-awareness. Some of them are even able to communicate in the language of the delvers and many of them took on forms that matched their desires. These Narehate were not created in the same methods that Bondrewd used but rather they are the byproducts of an artifact’s power and a person who became the village itself.
