San Diego Comic-Con has become well known for showing fans what big projects are coming from the studios, andMarvel Studioshas been a big part of that. However, this year the company made a surprising decision regarding a Hall H presentation.
Last year at SDCC,Marvel Studiosmade one of its biggest announcements. Not just one but the next three phases of the MCU were unveiled, including the next twoAvengersmovies and an emotionalBlack Panther: Wakanda Forevertrailer. It’s great for the fans to interact with the studio and learn more about the upcoming projects, and it is great for Marvel Studios to get fans excited and hype their upcoming projects.

However, this year Marvel Studios will have a big presentation at Hall H like they usually do. However, Marvel will still have a presence on the convention floor. Marvel Studios has many projects that have halted production due to the writers’ strike, including theThunderboltsmovie,Blade,Daredevil: Born Again, andWonder Man. Marvel Studios can’t give many updates or first looks at these productions. According toThe Wrap, Universal and HBO might follow Marvel Studios by sitting out.
Additionally, another strike could harm Marvel Studios' future productions and might be another reason for their lack of a presentation at SDCC.The Screen Actors Guild–or SAG-AFTRA– is negotiating a new contract with studios that must be agreed upon by June 30th. The actors could go on strike if a deal is not agreed on. If this happens, actors can’t provide services for the studios, including appearing at SDCC 2023.
If SAG-AFTRA goes on strike, Marvel Studios' SDCC presentation would be underwhelming, especially after last year’s blockbuster presentation. These same reasons may make other studios withdraw from SDCC.
The writers’ strike and potential SAG-AFTRA strike have pressured studios, with Disney recently delaying most of its projects, including the next twoAvengersmovies. If these strikes can be resolved soon, it may still be too late for Marvel Studios and other studios to have anything to present at SDCC. This news is disappointing for fans expecting to attend San Diego Comic-Con, butMarvel Studioswill still have some presence on the convention floor.
