Summary
The team of developers behindMinecraftcontinue to support the game across a long list of devices via consistent updates, with the latest 1.20.40 update ushering in plenty of bug fixes and introducing various experimental gameplay features, while also making big strides in improving parity between the game’s Java and Bedrock versions. While it’s not yet time for the release ofMinecraft’s next major update, this year’s recent Minecraft Live event did give fans a glimpse at what big features to expect in the future, as well as confirmation of this year’s Mob Vote winner.
DespiteMinecraftenjoying immense popularityfor more than a decade now, the game continues to grow thanks to the continued support of the development team at Mojang. While the game does receive smaller updates all year round which aim to fix bugs and make small tweaks in the interest of achieving greater parity between the game’s two main editions, Mojang seems to have settled on making significant content updates an annual event. These larger, named updates generally add in a variety of new features for players to enjoy, or overhaul core parts of the game such as terrain generation, caves, or even entire dimensions.

With this year’s Trails and Tales update released earlier in June, players will likely have a while yet to wait beforeMinecraft’s next major updateis ready to go. That said, the new 1.20.40 update does make a long list of changes that aim to improve the player experience, while also fielding some interesting but fairly controversial experimental changes. A notably long list of parity changes affect various parts of the game with the goal of making the game’s Bedrock version more synonymous with the Java Edition, with many appropriate tweaks being made to various mobs, audio effects, entities, and gameplay features. Alongside various bug and crash fixes, the update introduces some experimental changes regarding the villager trading system.
Villager trading has long served as one of the most lucrative and powerful features in the game, allowing players to grab some of the mostpowerful weapons and gear inMinecraftearly on, and with relative ease. With that said, it’s no wonder that Mojang’s attempts at nerfing the feature have been a controversial topic among the community after the developers first proposed the idea some time ago. The latest update does make changes to how powerful enchanted books are acquired, along with many tweaks to the trade offers made by villagers. It’s crucial to note, however, that these changes are completely optional for the moment, and can only be experienced by manually enabling them in the experimental settings menu when creating a new world.
Developers and players have discussed several ways in whichMinecraft’s villager tradingcould be adjusted to improve the acquisition of loot throughout the game in general. These current changes are noted to be purely experimental, and are subject to further change as players continue to provide feedback.
Minecraftis available on mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and legacy platforms.
Experimental Features
Villager Trade Rebalancing
This experiment has no effect on normal worlds. If you want to try these changes, you must turn on the Feature Toggle in the Experiments Menu when creating a new world.
Thank you to everyone that has sent in their suggestions and feedback regarding the experimental trade change! We are trying out these changes to rebalance the villager trade system and make it more fair and fun for everyone. However, these changes are not yet finaland they will stay as experimental features while we continue to work on them. We appreciate your feedback on these changes. Cartographer
Before now, Cartographers only sold maps to the Ocean Monument and Woodland Mansion. In this experiment Cartographers can sell seven new maps as well. These new maps each point to a different village or structure and can be used to find seven different biomes. This will help players who want to quickly find a specific location without waiting until they come across it by chance.
Cartographers from different biomes will sell a different selection of maps. Starting from one village, it will be possible to find every other village type by following maps from village to village.
Cartographers now sell 7 new maps: Desert Village Map, Jungle Explorer Map, Plains Village Map, Savanna Village Map, Snow Village Map, Swamp Explorer Map, and Taiga Village Map.
Armorer
The Armorer’s trades have been updated with many changes.
The biggest change is that buying diamond armor now requires paying a small amount of Diamonds as well as Emeralds. This is meant to make the Armorer’s diamond armor trades less useful at the start of the game when players don’t have any Diamonds, while still giving a powerful advantage to advanced players who have spent some time collecting Diamonds.
Early-game players will find Armorers useful as a great source of iron armor, Shields, and Emeralds.
Other changes include:
Structure Loot
Certain Enchanted Books now have a high chance of generating in some structures:
