It’s been over eight years since Overkill Software releasedPayday 2, the co-op first-person shooter in which players try and execute increasingly challenging robberies and heists. Now, Overkill is working onPayday 3, which has a tentative release window of 2023. Much has changed in eight years, however, and not just in terms of game development. In a recent livestream, Overkill detailed how it’s bringingPayday 3into the modern day with regards to digital currencies and security technology.
While Overkill wasn’t able to share anyPayday 3gameplay during its livestream, it did break down some interesting details about the upcoming sequel. Namely, thatPayday 3will be set in New Yorkand will revolve around heists that take place in a more modern, technologically forward setting. Specifically, Overkill mentions that inPayday 3,players will have access to a new selection of gadgets in order to take on heists the could include cryptocurrency, themes tied to mass surveillance, and even the Dark Web.

Overkill didn’t get into any context for its planned changes, but it’s easy to imagine how the ideas could work in practice. For example, a player’s earned cash from heists could be held incryptocurrency, which they could then use on the Dark Web to acquire weapons and gear. Mass surveillance could tie into casing a heist, as players hack into cameras and other devices to provide information about an upcoming robbery. It all comes together really well.
The fact thatPayday 3is also set in New York paints an even more exciting picture for the new game. Potential heists could include locations like the New York Stock Exchange trading floor, Penthouses, hotels, or any other notable New York City location. Heists don’t have to be for traditional items, either, because thePayday 3crewis fencing everything for cryptocurrency.
Without saying it explicitly, Overkill’s perhaps hinting that it’s going to go very big withPayday 3. That’s bigger locations, bigger heists, and a bigger framing so that players feel like they’re truly some of the world’s best thieves. Hopefully,Overkilldoes escalate the experience, because a larger game is somethingPaydayfans would likely love to see from the franchise.
There’s still a lot of time beforePayday 3is even close to being released, and as such, a lengthy amount of time before Overkill is ready to start sharing more about the game in detail. It’s surprising that it’d say anything at all this early, but that just goes to show how excitedPaydayfansare and how much Overkill can’t wait to share what it’s working on.
Payday 3is currently in development with a release window of 2023.
