Summary
There are not many games that put players in the shoes of a ghost hunter, but the ones that do it seem to have nailed down the concept.Phasmophobiais one such game, and it has been entertaining ghost hunting fans since its release. Its simple gameplay loop has made it one of the best games to play with friends on Halloween night, and each update seems to make it even better. Kinetic Games is now preparing to shake up the experience even further, but there is still so much more it could do.
Phasmophobiahas mostly played within its own world, but there is also a ton of potential for unique crossover content. Specifically, the concept feels tailor-made for a crossover with Sony’s very popularGhostbustersseries. The series helped put ghost hunting front and center with a comedic spin, and fans have been clamoring for a way to experience that series alongside friends. While it may not be likely, a crossover withGhostbustersfeels like a necessity at this point.

Phasmophobia and Ghostbusters Were Made for Each Other
Phasmophobia’s gameplay loop is relatively simplebut can also be extremely challenging. Up to four players team up to hunt down ghosts across various locales. They are given all the tools to track down the ghost, and then must attempt to figure out what type of ghost is haunting the location. They are then paid based on how successful they are at guessing, and then do it all over again in a new locale.
While that may sound easy, things can get hard very quickly as players are picked off by the ghost that they are hunting. Once their sanity gets low enough, the ghost will start to hunt them. This makes the game terrifying as it goes on, and higher difficulties make it very difficult to escape the ghost. This scare factor has made it very popular among streamers and gamers everywhere, but it could be made evenbetter with someGhostbusterscontent.
Ghostbustershas been a sensationever since the first movie released in 1984. It has gone on to spawn an entire franchise that has seen four movies with a fifth on the way, numerous video games, a LEGO set, an animated series, comic books, and even some board games. Its comedic tone and interesting concepts have helped make it a massive multimedia franchise that is showing no signs of slowing down. This success and popularity make it a prime candidate for crossover content, and it could even help takePhasmophobiato new heights.
WhilePhasmophobiais a bit scarier than theGhostbustersseries, it still feels like some crossover content would be a lot of fun. This content could be as simple as a new ghost hunt involvingiconicGhostbustersghosts like Slimer, the Gatekeeper, or the Keymaster. It could also be inspired byGhostbusters: Afterlifein particular and have players track down possessed marshmallows or a new ghost from the upcoming movie. It may not necessarily mesh perfectly with the scarier tone, but a few tweaks could make these ghosts fit.
This crossover content could also introduce an actual story toPhasmophobialikeSea of Thieves’crossover withPirates of the Caribbeandid for that game. Players could interact with the franchise’s main characters and go on a new adventure that sees them actually become Ghostbusters. It could be centered around the original franchise protagonists or serve as a way to advertise the next chapter of theGhostbusters: Afterlifeseries. Whatever form it takes,Ghostbusterscontent could be a fantastic ride for fans of the series and help givePhasmophobiaa whole new feel.
Phasmophobiais available now in early access on PC. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions are in development.
