A creativePokemonfan recently went online to share their original design for an impressive alternative form of Torterra, the final form of the Sinnoh region starter Grass-type Pokemon Turtwig. While the design is original, it does share some beats with another fan-favorite Pokemon, Blastoise, which many fans of thePokemonfranchise might enjoy.

Turtwig is widely considered one of the better starting options inPokemon Diamond and Pearl, which is unusual forstarting Grass-type Pokemon. First appearing in the fourth generation of thePokemonfranchise, Torterra is the final form of Turtwig and has appeared in otherPokemontitles likePokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphireas well asPokemon Legends: Arceus. While Torterra has been featured in numerous generations, the Pokemon’s design has largely remained the same.

Reddit user HalfgoblinHankins posted their own take on Torterra, showcasing a design that leans more heavily into the Sinnoh region starting Pokemon’s offensive capabilities. This take on Torterra would evolve from Grotle after the Pokemon mastered the bite attack. The fan drawing most notably features a bipedal Torterra, rather than the actual design with the creature on all fours like its earlier forms. Also featured in the fan art are different plants on the creature’s back. Instead of the tree that Torterra has on its back in the original design, HalfoblinHankins' take on the Pokemon features two Venus flytraps on the creature’s back, drawing similarities to the twin water jets featured on thefan-favorite Pokemon Blastoise’s shell.

HalfgoblinHankins' design is an interesting mix of original ideas and inspiration from thePokemonfranchise. While the details of their design clearly call back to earlier Pokemon, the drawing itself helps distinguish Torterra from the official game’s take on the Grass-type, as well asother Pokemon from the franchise. It’s an interesting take on the Pokemon that helps showcase Torterra’s untapped design potential. Another interesting takeaway from the design is that it would occur after the Pokemon masters a particular move, a gameplay mechanic that has yet to be utilized within thePokemonfranchise.

While branching evolutions have been a feature ofPokemonsince the initial game, the idea of altering a Pokemon’s design based on its mastery of certain moves is a unique take. Game Freak usually does quite well whendesigning its Pokemon, especially in the later forms that players can unlock, but on occasion fans like HalfgoblinHanks provide an impressive alternative design. HalfgoblinHankins' take on Torterra is an interesting redesign of the Pokemon, with its own criteria for evolving that helps distinguish it from the actual design featured in thePokemonfranchise.
