APokemonfan created a short and cute Pikachu animation in their own art style and posted their work on social media for other fans to see. After some time, otherPokemonfans praised the artist for their work, with a few of them asking how the animation was made.
Known as the Mouse Pokemon, Pikachu was one of the original batch of 151 Pokemon that made its debut inPokemon Red and Bluefor the Game Boy and became the cover mascot of 1999’sPokemon Yellow. As the longtime, iconic mascot of thePokemonseriesoverall, Pikachu’s endearing charm and distinct characteristics have made it a mainstay in popular culture for decades. As a result, Pikachu has had tributes and art created in its image, including animated shorts from fans. One fan sought to bring some of that original charm with their animation of the Mouse Pokemon.

On Reddit, aPokemonfan named flip5flap5 created a nine-second short video animation and posted it on the r/pokemon subreddit. In the video, a Pikachu ran along from the right side of the background and into the foreground where it came across a rice ball in the middle of the screen. The male Pikachu was quick to dive in and claim the rice ball for himself, not knowing that it was actually bait. As soon as Pikachu took a bite, an offscreenPokemontrainer quickly threw a Poke Ballat Pikachu. As the Poke Ball bounced off Pikachu, the Pokemon had a shocked look on his face as he realized that the rice ball was a trap. The look faded as soon as Poke Ball’s laser encapsulated the Mouse Pokemon, and with two shakes and a click from the Poke Ball, the Pikachu was caught.
On the r/pokemon subreddit, the video from flip5flap5 received over 1,000 upvotes within three days. In the comments, somePokemonfans asked which programs the OP used to create the animation. In response, flip5flap5 said that he used TVPaint due to his familiarity with it, but said that these animations can be done in other apps such as Animate and Harmony as well. A fewPokemonfans also pointed out the clever rice ball joke, with some jokingly calling them “jelly donuts” as a callback toBrock and the 4Kids era of thePokemonanime.
Thanks to art and animations fromPokemonfans such as flip5flap5, the Mouse Pokemon will not be forgotten anytime soon. With the arrival ofDetective Pikachu Returnslater this year, Pikachu fans will have more to look forward to in the future.
