ThePokemonfranchise features a wide variety of adorable, awe-inspiring, and sometimes creepy pocket monsters. Each individual Pokemon has its own stats, size, and abilities, and some of them–dubbed shiny Pokemon–even have alternate color schemes. Generally, gamers who find a shiny will attempt to catch it for bragging rights, but onePokemongamer is purposefully hunting down uncatchable shinies.

Shiny Pokemon are rare, although catch rates vary depending on the game being played. This rarity gave rise to thehobby of shiny hunting, where gamers playPokemongames for the specific purpose of tracking down shiny Pokemon. Generally speaking, they do this to catch the shinies and gather a collection for clout or bragging rights, but not all shinies can be captured.

Twitch streamer Oliver_MKP is an avid shiny hunter who seems to have been having a streak of bad luck recently. He repeatedly ran into uncatchable shinies while trying togather shiny starter PokemoninPokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearl. After finding a shiny Starly as his first uncatchable shiny in about 15 years of shiny hunting, the streamer appears to have become interested in hunting uncatchable shinies. Now, he’s taken a break from his usual shiny hunting activities to specifically track down shiny Pokemon he can’t catch.

In an 18-minute-long YouTube video, Oliver_MKP shared his encounters with 10 uncatchable shiny Pokemon found across multiple games. This includes the uncatchable shiny Starly that was his very first uncatchable shiny. Oliver_MKP encountered six more uncatchable shiny Starlies while trying to catch his shiny starters, which seems to have led to him hunting uncatchable shinies. So far, he’s intentionally found three more aside from the Starly–ashiny Pidgey inPokemon HeartGold, a Salamence inPokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and even Wally’s Ralts inPokemon Emerald.

Most of these uncatchable shinies are encountered in the opening of the game, before the player is able to capture Pokemon normally. Wally’s Ralts stands out for being a recurring Pokemon in its game, albeit one that is captured by a rival character rather than the player. It appears that manyPokemonfans are getting tired of uncatchable shinies appearing, leading to a movement that wantsPokemon Brilliant DiamondandShining Pearlto be thelast games that feature uncatchable shinies. However, Oliver_MKP’s quest for uncatchable shinies shows that other fans can be just as enthralled by uncatchable shinies as they are with regular shinies.
