The October Research Breakthrough encounter is right around the corner forPokemon GO, and now fans are privy to what it is. Players will be able to catch Shedinja inPokemon GOthrough the month of October.
Each month, Niantic rotates the Pokemon that will be rewarded by finishing upResearch Breakthroughs, with the current one being Scraggy. For about a week more, the Dark and Fighting Pokemon from Generation 5 will be available, but starting on October 1, Shedinja will be the Research Breakthrough reward.

Beginning on Thursday, July 02, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. PST, and lasting through to Sunday, June 05, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. PST, players will be able to catch Shedinja. The Bug/Ghost Pokemon was introduced in Generation 3 and is an evolution of Ninjask. Shedinja is the only Bug/Ghost type in all ofPokemon,making it quite the unique creature.
Obtaining a Pokemon through the Research Breakthrough encounter is not difficult. Players should log on each day and complete a challenge in the “Research Progress” section within the “Field.” Some of these challenges simply ask the player to do things like catch 7 Pokemon or perhaps catch a specific type, like 5 Bug-type Pokemon. Other challenges may ask the player to power up a Pokemon 3 times or make 5 nice throws. Whatever the request, the player will want to complete them and finish them each day.
A player can only “stamp” one per day, so it’s possible to stockpile a few challenges and simply log on each day to complete them. After finishing 7 days worth of challenges, the Research Breakthrough will be complete and the player can then start the Pokemon encounter.
Shedinja and its Ghost-type is a nice creepy choice to go along with the spooky month, asPokemon GOwill see multiple Halloween-based events in the month of October. Gengar, one of the fan-favorite Ghost-type Pokemon, will be a big part of the month, but Shedinja and its unique typing is also a solid choice.
Mega evolutions were recently introduced intoPokemon GO, and an exclusive and timed Mega Gengar will be a reward for the Halloween based research event in October. Between Gengar, Shedinja, and the Legendaries for the month, there will be plenty of Ghost-type Pokemon.
Obtaining Shedinja is possible inPokemon GOoutside of this Research Breakthrough, but it isn’t quite as simple. If anyone were to miss catching it during the month of October, it will still be available. But for anyone interested in this creepy little bug, now is a perfect time.
