Anytime a newPokemoncollectible comes out it’s bound to get the attention of thousands of people. In fact, the current craze surroundingPokemonOreos made its way onto late-night TV with a hilarious take on the anime’s classic song.

PokemonOreos launched on September 8, however, both collectors and those with just plain general love for Oreos quickly found themselves unable to find them on store shelves or online. The Oreo collection consists of 16 different cookie variants with the beloved pocket monsters engraved on them, but the elusive Mew’s scarcity sooncaused thesePokemonOreos to be resold onlinefor some rather absurd prices.

It didn’t take long for the new eatable Pokemon bubble to catch the eye of media outlets, thus promptingThe Late Show with Stephen Colbertto come up with a parody to make fun of scalpers who are flipping Mew Oreos for hundreds or thousands of dollars. The brief clip channels its inner wolf of Pallet Town with an embarrassingly catchy “Oreos! Gonna Buy ‘em All!" However, it also works as a cautionary tale against “investing” money into Oreos, regardless of those being Mew cookies.

At the time of writing, prices for Mew cookies are all over the place, with eBay still showing many listings of over $1,000 for the coveted sandwich cookie. However, those looking to make a quick buck on a Mew instead of eating it should probably look towards lower prices because the frenzy appears to be cooling down. Brand new packs of thePokemonOreos can also be found, starting at around $15, which is almost four times their retail price.

Besides Mew, the rest of the Oreo set consists of Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Sandshrew, Jigglypuff, Lapras, Dratini, Cyndaquil, Sableye, Snivy, Pancham, Grookey, Rowlet, and Piplup, although none of those come close to matching the hype around Mew cookies. Considering how thePokemontrading card market absolutely skyrocketedlast year, it’s not surprising that the same thing happened with these Oreos, raising the question of what will be the nextPokemoncollectible to be traded on such a scale.

With a newPokemon Trading Cardgame just around the corner,Pokemon Unite’s success, the upcoming release ofBrilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and next year’sLegends Arceus, it’s safe to sayPokemonhas had an unforgettable 25th anniversary that even brought snacks to the party, because that’s what cookies are for, eating them.
