For months, rumors have been swirling that the dormantSilent Hillsurvival-horror franchise would be coming back with a reboot on the PlayStation 5. First fans believed that the game would be shown at the PS5 reveal event this past summer, then they expected it to be present at the event where Sony announced the PS5’s price and release date. Unfortunately, the rumoredSilent HillPS5 reboot was a no-show at both, with the fans' next hope, and the last for 2020, being The Game Awards.
Many were expecting tosee theSilent HillPS5 reboot at The Game Awards 2020. Unfortunately, the event came and went with no sign of the game. PlayStation did show off the upcoming PS5 exclusive gameReturnal, due out for release in March, but otherwise most of the world premiere trailers were dedicated to other games and companies. But while this may makeSilent Hillfans lose hope that the PS5 reboot even exists, they shouldn’t give up just yet.

Reputable Leakers
TheSilent HillPS5 reboothas not been announced in any official capacity. As far as the general public knows, the game doesn’t exist. However, the game has been leaked by reputable leakers who have accurately leaked industry news in the past. While it’s always possible that they have their information wrong or plans have changed, it seems unlikely that they would jeopardize their reputations for accurate leaks just to mislead people about aSilent Hillgame.
Generally speaking, these leakers have mostly had the same story as well. According to the leaks, theSilent HillPS5 game is being developed at Sony’s Japan Studio, having come about thanks to adeal between Sony and Konami. The game will apparently serve as a reboot for Konami’s dormantSilent Hillfranchise. It’s possible that the leakers are simply copying what each other is saying in order to make the information seem more legitimate, but that seems unlikely.

In any case, theSilent HillPS5 reboot has been outed by individuals who have accurately leaked gaming news in the past, and while it looks like they were wrong about the game being shown this year, that doesn’t mean the game isn’t real. If anything, it may just be a sign that Sony is waiting until later than expected to announce the game, for whatever reason. Perhaps it doesn’t want to draw attention away from PS5 games that are releasing sooner, or maybe it wants to give the developers more time to work on the game.
Who is Making the Game
While most of theSilent HillPS5 leakers have said that the game is being developed at Sony’s Japan Studio with original director Keiichiro Toyama at the helm, others have said that the game is actually the horror game in development at Kojima Productions. Whatever the case may be, a recent development has cast some of theseSilent HillPS5 leaks in doubt, asToyama has left Sony’s Japan Studioto form a studio of his own.
Toyama’s Bokeh Game Studiolooks to be developing a horror game not unlikeSilent Hill, and so perhaps development is still continuing under him. Then again, maybe he has been ousted from the project and replaced. It’s also possible that Toyama wasn’t actively developing theSilent HillPS5 reboot, and that the leakers were wrong about that piece of the puzzle. Another possibility is that theSilent HillPS5 reboot is basically done with development, and so Toyama has started his own studio to pursue other projects. Until an official announcement is made about the game and who is making it, though, all fans can do is speculate.
Looking Ahead
While it’s disappointing that theSilent HillPS5 reboot was not at The Game Awards 2020, that doesn’t mean fans won’t get to see it sooner rather than later. Rumors indicate that Sony has an event planned for January or February, perhaps a State of Play event, and so maybe the game will be shown off there. After all, it was also expected thatCapcom was going to have aResident Evil 8trailer at The Game Awards, only for that not to come to pass, so maybe this rumored early 2021 PlayStation event will be especially exciting for horror fans.
