And although thePS5 reveal event has been delayedto focus on more important voices being heard, the buildup behind the reveal is still intense. And now a new patent shows an odd and interesting possibility for hardware for the Japanese company.
Sonyhas just patented a game cartridge device, possibly for the PS5. The patent was published just today, on June 2 at the United States Patent and Trademarks Office.

In2019 Sony patented a cartridge device for the PS5, but information about that has since been confirmed by sources to be a storage medium. This new device looks very unique, and almost like its own separate piece of equipment.
The patent itself refers to “game cartridge,” but the PS5 is already confirmed to be using a Blu-Ray drive yet again, so the entire situation is very intriguing. There have beentheories of PS5 related game cartridgesfrom all the way back in 2018, but this brand new patent doesn’t mention the PS5.

It is possible that this new patent is some sort of stand-alone plug and play device. ThePlayStation Classic had some good and some not so good games, as the library was baked into the console itself. Perhaps this new patent is a stand-alone idea that can use cartridges to swap out new games.
The PlayStation Vita is one of the only Sony consoles to ever use anything remotely close to a cartridge. The cult-classicVita had many beloved games. It would be a wonky idea, but maybe the new patent allows the PS5 to play old Vita cards.
Whatever the patent is, it may take time for fans to ever learn of what it is. In fact, many patents never find their way to consumers and stay in the idea phase forever, asSony once patented a Switch like a device in 2017. This game cartridge device could end up being a stand-alone console of sorts, it could be a part of the PS5 and fans will learn of it soon, or it could be something that never sees the light of day.
