Summary
The return of Ahsoka Tano came and went, but her series went out with a bang. Dave Filoni has continued to impress fans with his grasp of theStar Warsmythos, delivering hit after hit all while transforming the entire makeup of theStar Warsuniverse. He did more with a single season in a single show than most filmmakers do with three movies. The ending ofAhsoka’sfirst season has given fans a lot to look forward to in the coming years.
With Grand Admiral Thrawn on the precipice of success, Ahsoka Tano,Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger prepare for a battle that can change the direction of the galaxy forever. The Chimaera hovers above the Nightsister tower, ready to disembark as soon as the Night Troopers load the last storage container. Meanwhile, Baylan Skoll is off on a journey of his own, searching for a power that he failed to describe adequately. This finale had fans sitting at the edge of their seats.

What Happened in Ahsoka’s Finale?
Although the heroes didn’t seem too stressed about it, time really was of the essence as Grand Admiral Thrawn packed up the Nightsisters' containers (are they hibernating Nightsisters?) and was ready to beeline it back to the galaxy far, far away. A galaxy that Thrawn has been noticeably absent from for more than a decade. However, being the tactical genius he is, he knewAhsoka and her two Bokken Jediwould attempt to stop him, so he needed to delay them just long enough that they couldn’t get on his ship.
As expected, the Jedi trio arrived at the Nightsister spire and, despite the hellfire raining down on them from the Star Destroyer’s cannons, gained entry. Things weren’t as easy as taking an elevator to the top and jumping onto the ship, unfortunately. Once inside, a platoon of Night Troopers greeted them with blaster fire. Just as the heroes thought they took out every trooper, the Great Mothers raised them from the dead to continue their attack, forcing the Jedi to flee up the stairs.

With the zombie troopers in hot pursuit,Morgan Elsbeth stands in their waywith the Blade of Talzin, but Ahsoka orders Ezra and Sabine to go on ahead and catch Thrawn. Doing as commanded, the two are met with minimal resistance at the top of the spire, where they’re nearly ready to give up because the Star Destroyer seems too far away. However, Sabine feels confident in her Force powers and promises to get them both across the gap. After some reluctance on Ezra’s part, Sabine manages to fulfill half her promise, getting her long-lost friend onto Thrawn’s ship — but she fails to join him. Instead, she stays to help Ahsoka with Elsbeth.
Ahsoka and her apprentice manage to defeat Elsbeth and the Night Troopers, but aren’t quick enough to catch upto the Star Destroyer. Thrawn and the three witches manage to escape, putting Peridea in their rearview. Unbeknownst to the Grand Admiral, Ezra hides and stealthily commandeers a small shuttle to seek out and reunite with Chopper and General Hera Syndulla, whom he hasn’t seen since theRebelsfinale. Thrawn’s final destination, however, ends up being Dathomir, which fans have never seen in live-action.
Meanwhile, Ahsoka, Sabine, and Hyuang find themselves making Peridea their new home, and fans get one last glimpse of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker as he watches over Ahsoka. He gives a small smirk as a sign of hisapproval for the path Ahsokaended up on. They’re not the only ones stranded on Peridea, though. Shin Hati, who didn’t appear in the finale until the very end, arrives at the camp of the bandits she fought alongside and ignites her lightsaber in some sort of claim to leadership. Then there’s Baylan Skoll.
What Ahsoka’s Finale Means for the Future of Star Wars
In the biggest surprise of the series, Baylan Skoll is last seen on the outstretched hand of a monstrous statue of the Father, the Mortis God who represents balance in the Force. On either side of this statue is a carving of the Son and Daughter, although the latter is missing her head. Skoll stares out from his location at the horizon where he sees a blinking light atop a mountain. Filoni has clear plans to continue the Mortis story in either another series or a second season ofAhsoka. This most likely means fans will seeHayden Christensen returnas Anakin, since his character is intrinsically tied to the Mortis Gods. It also potentially means the arrival of a character from Legends: Abeloth, the Mother.
A second season ofAhsokawill undoubtedly deal with the Mortis storyline, along with Ahsoka training Sabine and building her own Jedi Order. Unless theNew Republic stealsthe Eye of Sion from Thrawn, Ahsoka and her group are on Peridea to stay. This is good forStar Wars, because it gives filmmakers a whole new sandbox to play in with fresh storylines. Unfortunately, the untimely passing of Ray Stevenson means recasting Baylan Skoll, and no actor could bring the depth and gravitas that Stevenson brought to the character. He truly upped the bar for acting inStar Wars.
Over in the originalStar Warsgalaxy, war is brewing. Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return means the Imperial remnants will come together to wage war against the New Republic, which is not remotely ready for a war. The only advantage they have against the heir to the Empire is Ezra’s warning, but nobody knows if anyone will listen to him. However, going to Dathomir with thousands of containers of who-knows-what inside doesn’t bode well for the good guys. Ezra mentioned that Thrawn “woke up” the three Nightsisters, leading many to believe that each container houses a hibernating Nightsister. That gives the Empire anarmy of Force-wielding witchesthat the Republic will have to deal with in a second season ofAhsoka.
