Summary

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderandStar Wars Jedi: Survivortake a lot after Soulslikes and that’s predominantly what makes them rare and authentic asStar Warsgames in particular.Fallen Orderdoesn’t feature as many bosses asSurvivor, and of those bosses players encounter the Second Sister multiple times where her health is only taken down to predetermined percentages before the fight is interrupted or cut short. But like many Soulslike games, each boss or regular enemy has their telegraphable attacks thatStar Wars Jedi’s Cal Kestismust learn to parry, dodge, and punish.

It may be difficult to hop back toFallen Orderafter playingSurvivordue to how muchSurvivorstarts players out with, andFallen Orderwill unfortunately always feel slower and more barren in terms of gameplay as a result. The benefit here forSurvivoris that more bosses and enemies can have complicated attack patterns and dynamic encounters right away to accommodate for all the options players already have, and players truly get the most out ofSurvivorif they have a strong familiarity with other Soulslikes, particularlyFromSoftware’sDark Souls 2.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Turns Dark Souls 2’s Covetous Demon into a Regular Enemy

Many Dark Souls 2 Bosses are Elementary, and Covetous Demon is One of Its Most Unmemorable

Dark Souls 2has an overabundance of bosses, some of which are difficult to even stumble upon in a first, blind playthrough unless players are content to die to mobs frequently as they search each nook and cranny of an environment. That’s easier said than done, though. Unlikeother FromSoftware Soulslikes and even otherDark Soulsgames, the regions players explore are almost all more challenging than the bosses within them, and the run-backs to the boss are all laden with ambush mobs that sometimes require players to engage with them rather than simply being able to sprint through.

It can then be alarming when, after all the tedium of a region’s run-back has been endured, a boss fight is rudimentary and simplistic in a way where if players don’t get greedy, they’ll likely succeed on an initial attempt. MostDark Souls 2boss fights can be won by only risking one or two hits at a time in a clear opening before walk-strafing around the boss to avoid an attack with a horrible hitbox and even worse tracking.

Because many bosses only have a few different attacks to worry about, they can be easily punishable and telegraphed. The Covetous Demon is a perfect example of this, andStar Wars Jedi: Survivorwas brilliant to either intentionally or inadvertently employ the hideous slug’s attack pattern for its large Bilemaw beasts.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Repurposes Covetous’ Move Set to Great Effect

Close inspection easily deduces thatSurvivor’s Bilemaw creaturesshare an almost identical move set to that ofDark Souls 2’s Covetous Demon. The attack that gives this away the clearest is when players are attacking the Bilemaw or Covetous from the side and it topples over to roll on that side and trample them.

The Bilemaw isn’t only a boss in its Vile form but a large creature that players can encounter many times, same as Mogus, Jotaz, or Goroccos, and therefore a decent knowledge of Covetous’ light move set beforeSurvivorwill give players a wonderful muscle memory advantage when it comes to encountering Bilemaws, even though the Bilemaw is much fiercer and more aggressive than the gluttonous fiend found inDark Souls 2’s Earthen Peak.
