Courtesy ofStarWars.com, here are 6 horrific planets seen throughout the various canonStar Warsstories. The list fittingly starts with Malachor, which has maintained its dark and menacing atmosphere since it jumped from Legends to canon after its first appearance inKnights of the Old Republic II(though technically that was Malachor V). In the animated seriesStar Wars Rebels, heroes Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, and Ahsoka Tano traveled there to unearth the secrets of a hidden underground Sith temple as they sought ways to defeat the Empire’s menacing Inquisitors. But where dark knowledge lies dormant, so too do dark presences. The return of Maul and an intense duel between Ahsoka and Darth Vader make the planet feel all the more significantly evil.
Next is Exegol, seen in thestill divisiveEpisode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. The lightning-scarred world is the base for a fanatical group of cultists who help Darth Sidious/Palpatine return from the grave, which would be enough to include it on this list. But given the surprise creation of a massive enemy fleet there, it traverses the range from unsettling to downright shocking. For some, the evil vibes are enough to scare them away. For others, the fact thatThe Rise of Skywalkertook place there is probably its spookiest aspect of all.
Naturally, most of these planets have similar dark connections. But it’s worth mentioning thatnot all dark side users are Sith. Case in point, the Nightsisters of Dathomir, the next planet on the list. The magic they practice on their craggy red homeworld may have dark ties, but it’s a power all their own. Furthermore, the next planet of Mortis offers its own take on the darkness, serving as the home of powerful Force-using beings that represent the dark side, the light side, and a balance of the two. The mountainous world remains a mystery, but given a tease at the end ofAhsokaseason 1, it looks like its time in the franchise is far from over.
The lava-covered planet of Mustafar, where Darth Vader dwells during his broody self-care days, is another perfect entry. Choosing to remain on the world where a crushing defeat by Obi-Wan Kenobi turned him into the half-machine man who terrorizes the galaxy is certainly a power move. But perhaps the scariest of all is Maldo Kreis. Fans may not know the name by heart after the ice planet’s one-time appearance inThe Mandalorian, but only two words are necessary to keep this one right at the top: giant spiders. No more information is required. Happy Halloween.
