Summary

OneAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsplayer came across a bizarre bug bestowing a never-ending nose upon Marina, in addition to causing some other graphical glitches. The strange sight later made the rounds on social media, much to the amusement of manyAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsfans.

Compared to the rest of the industry, Nintendo’s contemporary games tend to be as technical problem-free as they come. The company’s policy of polishing titles to perfection became all the more important in the post-GameCube era, when Nintendo stopped trying to rival its competitors' hardware prowess and instead opted to pursue modestly specced consoles that aren’t great at compensating for poor optimization. The latestAnimal Crossinggame is no exception to that practice, withNew Horizonseven being delayedto allow for more development time without crunch, ultimately delivering a fairly polished experience.

But when it comes to software as complex as video games, there’s no such thing as a bug-free experience, as Reddit user bag_of_deer can attest. Namely, after recently launchingAnimal Crossing:New Horizons, this player was greeted with a peculiar title screen featuring Marina with a seemingly never-ending nose, which extended below the borders of the Switch display. Moreover, the island that would normally be visible in the background of the welcome screen didn’t load properly, with the game instead displaying just a couple of shading textures.

The unusual sight amused enough fans to end up on the front page of the r/AnimalCrossing subreddit, with numerous players joking about how Marina completed her transformation into Cthulhu and is now “biblically accurate.” The fan who stumbled upon the bizarre bug did not elaborate on their experience, making it difficult to narrow down the source of the problem. There have only been a few dozen reports about issues with the game’s title screen sinceNew Horizonshit the market in early 2020, but most of them date back to its release year, and none describe anything of this sort.

Given that state of affairs, it’s fair to assume that the problem isn’t widespread and might simply be caused by a corrupted texture cache, or merely a rare read error. An equally unique bug surfaced online in August 2022, treating one player to ajump scare inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons. Since bag_of_deer’s post was seemingly made in jest with no additional follow-up, they were presumably able to resume their island adventures after moving beyond the bugged title screen.

Curiously enough, this is not the first nose-related issue that the game’s fandom raised in recent months; back in July, one sharp-eyed player took to social media to bemoan the fact thatKatrina is missing a nose inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons.
