The Batmandirector Matt Reeves discussed the only mandate given to him by Warner Bros for the upcoming superhero film. For those who don’t know, usually the writers aren’t allowed 100% creative freedom when they work on these films, which can cause a lot of creative differences between the directors or talent involved.

The Batmanfollows Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) in what they’re dubbing as “year 2,” which means that this is the beginning of Batman’s career as a crime fighter. Despite this being dubbed at “year 2,” it’s realistically an interpretation of year one.Batman’s costume is in its early stages, there aren’t any super villains, it’s based in realism, and Bruce Wayne is still fresh off the wounds of his parents' death.

This Bruce Wayne is a brutal, angry, and vengeful vigilante with a death wish. He doesn’t care for his future, he’s focused on his short term goal without thinking about the long term repercussions of his anger, nightly fighting, and dangerous lifestyle. This is going to bea very darkBatmanfilm, and director Reeves discussed the only mandate that he had to follow when making this movie. “They embraced it the whole time,” the director said during an interview Collider. “There was never a moment where they said to me, ‘Are you sure? Let’s not.’ They really leaned into everything, and I’ve had the support to do exact… I have to say, this movie is exactly the movie I wanted it to be, and they have supported me all the way through it”.

It’s good to see a director get the movie he wanted, but like stated earlier, it’s never 100%. “One thing they did do, which was my intention from the beginning, was they said, ‘Look, it’s important to us that the movie be PG-13. It’s a Batman movie, and we’re investing so much in it,'” Reeves continued. “I was like, ‘Well, in the Apes movies, I tried to sort of find that balance as well.’ I felt like in that same way, I knew that we could push the boundaries of what you could do in a PG-13 movie and still deliver everything I wanted to do.”

For those that who don’t know, Reeves was also the director ofthe recentPlanet of the Apestrilogy, which received critical as well as commercial acclaim. Those movies were dark and had a PG-13 rating that managed to attract a large amount of viewers. Seeing what the director did with that series gives fans an idea as to what will happen withThe Batman.
