Of the numerous launch titles releasing for the PS5,The Pathlessis one that has gone under the radar for a number of members of the gaming community. Featuring an expansive open world environment and creative shooting mechanics,The Pathlessis certainly a game PS5 fans should have on their radar. To drum up more interest, the creative director of the game has now detailed specific elements of how the PS5 DualSense controller impacts gameplay.

The Pathlessis currently being developed by Giant Squid Studios, the game studio behind the colorful and experimental underwater diving gameAbzu. Though, Giant Squid’s newest title seems to veer away from the core design structure present inAbzu. WhileAbzuwas linear and atmospheric,The Pathlessseems to have much more intricacy in terms of game design and features an open world for the player to explore. Plus, the game utilizes a core feature of the PS5’s DualSense controller.

The creative director of the game, Matt Nava, who also served as the art director forJourney, discussed at length the core gameplay mechanics featured inThe Pathless. The game is very fast-paced, with the player character moving very quickly throughout the area while shooting at red targets. The gameplay focuses less on precise shooting and more so on timing each shot carefully, considering how fast the player is moving.

However, one thing that Nava noticed with the PS5 version, the use of adaptive triggers andhaptic feedback in the PS5 DualSense controlleractually gave the player a much better idea of when to shoot. Again, since the shooting mechanics focus more on timing instead of accuracy, but the additional feedback helps the player read the timing of their shots much better. In fact, when Nava went back and played the game on the PS4, he actually noted how he “missed that extra indicator of the timing.”

It’s hard to know how a console or controller will function without actually trying it out in person, but hopefully this should give people some idea of what to expect in terms of the capabilities of thePS5 DualSense controller. Although, ifThe Pathlessis any indication, it seems like these controller features could really make a difference in terms of how developers approach the design of their games.

It will be interesting to see in what other ways developers will utilize the DualSense’s features. From a consumer’s perspective, it’s hard to know what sort of a difference haptic feedback will actually make in terms of gameplay. This is just one example of how the PS5 controller’s features are utilized, but how will it impact games likeDemon’s SoulsorSpider-Man: Miles Morales? Fans will just have to wait and find out.

The Pathlessis set to launch on November 12th for iOS, PC, PS4, and PS5.
