With the rumors of a remake being developed forStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, many fans are wondering (and anxious) about what changes could be made to the game. Widely considered one of the bestStar Warsgames ever made, and by some the greatest game period,Knights of the Old Republicis now almost two decades old. As such, it’s likely that many of its outdated features will be updated in any full-fledged remake. It is likely that the game will end up leaving the fully turn-based combat behind for some blend of real-time action with the original’s iconic level of strategy. If this holds true, aKOTORremake should take a look at the most successful recent single-playerStar Warsgame,Jedi: Fallen Order.
Fans are going to be apprehensive about any changes being made toKOTOR, either its mechanics or elements of its story. It will be impossible to keep every fan happy, and those that would like to stay realistic about a possible remake have likely accepted that a transition to action-focused gameplay.Improvements toKOTOR’score mechanics are going to be made in any remake, but if its purported developer, Asypr Media, wants a good example of how to handle the real-time combat, it’s likely looking atJedi: Fallen Order.

What Knights of the Old Republic Can Learn From Modern Games
Fan reactions tothe rumoredKOTORremakewill run the gamut. Some believe the game is already perfect and would like just a remaster, but that wouldn’t make much sense given that the original is already available on most modern systems, and on mobile. If a full-fledged remake is under way, it’s likely to move towards real-time action, and part ofFallen Order’s success came from its deliberate and methodical combat. The Soulslike elements one of the most well-receivedStar Warsfeatures in a long time, as it brought out the strength and required skill of a lightsaber with its own take on the methodicalSoulselements.
The game’s combat early on was very reminiscent of itsDark Soulsinfluence, as players needed to carefully manage aggression with defensive measures until later in the game once all ofCal’s abilitieswere unlocked. At that point combat felt more like a Jedi power fantasy as players could knock back dozens of enemies at once and send their lightsaber flying across the battlefield.
The battle system ofFallen Ordercould transition well into a mix of the strategic elements ofKOTOR. While many fans will alwaysbelieve thatKOTORcan’t be toppedby anotherStar Warsgame, most would likely still be eager to pick up a full remake ofKOTORregardless. So, learning from whatFallen Ordergot right would go a long way. It’s decisive combat would fitKOTOR’ssignature level of strategy well and the production value put into its world and story could breathe new life into the eighteen-year-oldKnights of the Old Republic.
While the remake is currently still just a rumor, eager fans are still likely speculating about what the remake would look like. If it really is being made, aKOTORremake needs to take a long hard look at its most successful little brother inJedi: Fallen Order.
