Marvel made a concerted effort to change the tone of theThorfranchise and showcase the comedic side of its titular star. Hemsworth previously stated that while he was happy with the secondThorfilm, it didn’t provide opportunities to be funny. TheTaika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) directed filmgrossed over $850 million worldwide on a $180 million budget.

The New Zealand-born filmmaker is currently directingThor:Love and Thunder. Last year, Waititi revealed that the upcoming sequel will draw inspiration from theMighty Thorcomic books. The film is expected to seeNatalie Portman’s Jane Foster become the Mighty Thorand gain similar powers to the former king of Asgard. Portman last played Foster in 2013’sThor: The Dark World. The large ensemble cast ofLove and Thunderincludes Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, and Karen Gillen as Nebula.
Last year, Oscar Award-winning actor Christian Bale signed on to play the villainous Gorr the God Butcher. In the comics, Gorr has superhuman strength and the ability to shape-shift and camouflage. After his mother and children die, Gorr strives to kill every god that exists. Fans were caught off guard by the casting announcement becauseThe Dark Knightstar previously stated that he’d never seen a single Avengers film or any superhero film aside fromChristopher Reeve’s Superman movieswhile also indicating that he had no interest in returning to the genre at the time.
While details ofLove and Thunderhave been kept under wraps, Thompson has said the script is both humorous and touching. Meanwhile, Hemsworth toldGQ Australiathat he is motivated to make an even better film thanRagnarok. “There’s that same – if not more – pressure now to do that again,” says the star. “So there’s a little bit of exciting nervous energy that is motivating all of us to reach a little further and make sure we’re covering all bases and approaching the scene from every angle.”
FollowingLove & Thunder,Hemsworth is expected to start filmingGeorge Miller’sMad Maxspinoff film,Furiosa. The highly anticipated film will explore Furiosa’s origins and backstory, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing a younger version of Charlize Theron’s Furiosa.
Thor: Love and Thunderis scheduled to be released in theatres on July 31, 2025.
