World of Warcraftplayers may have just discovered whyDragonflight’snew Dracthyr Evoker race class combo doesn’t have a tanking specialization. This new revelation came due to some journal entries discovered in theWorld of WarcraftPublic Test Realm forDragonflightPatch 10.0.7.
Dracthyr Evokers introduced inDragonflightare elite soldiers created by Neltharion to wield the powers of all five dragonflights in tandem. However, players couldn’t help but notice the absence of black dragonflight abilities in their specializations–the Devastation DPS spec focused on the red and blue dragon magic, while the Restoration healing spec uses green and bronze dragon magic. It seemed odd the Dracthyr did not have a black dragon-themed tanking specialization considering who made them.

It now seems there is a lore reason for this absence. Several journal entries found in a recent build ofWorld of Warcraft’sPatch 10.0.7 PTR reveal some interesting lore, including apotential name forDragonflight’sPatch 10.1 zone. These books, written by a new black dragon scientist named Adamanthia, contain correspondence with Neltharion. In the entries, it is revealed Adamanthia had removed the black dragonflight essence from the Dracthyr, despite her concerns that doing so “may permanently cripple their abilities.”
This is likely the reasoning behind the dearth of earth-themed magic for the newDragonflightclass. Only four Dracthyr Evoker abilities have the black dragonflight tag, all of which involve crowd control or damage reduction. Additionally, only one of these techniques is natively given to the Dracthyr–the rest must be acquiredin the Evoker Talent Trees inDragonflight. These abilities are likely the vestiges of power Adamanthia was unable to take from them–and a theoretical tanking specialization that never was.
Many players are starting to wonder ifWorld of Warcraftis planning on adding a tanking spec for the Evoker in the future. If the black dragonflight essence was removed from the Dracthyr, perhaps players will discover a way to put it back in the future, unlocking a new type of Evoker in the process. This could give players a seventh class option if they wished totank inWorld of Warcraft.
That said, there is currently no evidenceWorld of Warcraftis planning on doing so. It is just as likelyWoWadded this detail to explain why Evokers don’t have a tanking spec, and won’t ever have the ability to do so. Alternatively, Dracthyr might eventually be able to play other classes besides Evoker in the future, asWorld of Warcrafthas done with Orc Priestsand Goblin Monks. Be it as a Protection Warrior or an unannounced third Evoker specialization, hopefully, Dracthyr players will be able to play the tank role sometime in the future.
